Completing The Foreigner’s Journey

Nioh: Complete Edition is an action game by KOEI TECMO GAMES CO. LTD. The game takes place in the late Sengoku era Japan where Irish sailor William Adams has to retrieve a powerful relic called Amrita from occultist Edward Kelley. William travels back to the monster-infested country, and fight both the supernatural Yokai and possessed warlords. The game features an open-world environment with collectible items and materials. Players can upgrade William with new skills, weapons, and armor. They can rest at shrines to set checkpoint, replenish health, and assign experience points to skills. Enemies respawn after players rest on a shrine. The combat system is “hack and slash” with a heavy emphasis on blocking, dodging and stamina. This is reminiscent of Dark Souls where mistakes are punishing. William can be easily killed if he gets hit even once. They can also summon other players to help them along the way.

PROS

  • Inspired by Japanese culture and history
  • Upgrade system
  • Tight hack and slash combat

CONS

  • Can be too difficult for beginners
